Monsters Love Candies ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿฌ- Learning Activity for Double Digit Addition

Learning double digit addition, particularly with regrouping, can be tricky. This activity introduces double digit addition while kids participate in role play.

Main Plot:

The story is about two monsters, named, Sunny and Pinky. They are best friends and go to the Monstersโ€™ University every day. On their way to the University, there is a candy shop and both of them love to eat candies. Every day, Sunny and Pinky buy some candies from the shop. They get a packet (bowl), for each set of 10 candies. And after making the set of 10s, the remaining candies are given without any packet. The shopkeeper calculates the total number by adding the candies demanded by Sunny and Pinky. They pay the price equal to the total number of candiesand go the university. This sequence can be repeated for many days (rounds).

Introducing Double Digit Addition:

While enacting the above story, the director of the play (that is you ๐Ÿ˜€) can tell the kids (at least one of them) to demand candies in double digits. Sunny and Pinky tell the number of their choice one after the other. And the shopkeeper prepares the packets separately for each one of them. Now, since Sunny and Pinky are best friends, they want to pay total price together. So, the shopkeeper adds both the number. Here, packets and single candies can be added separately. A simple worksheet such as shown in the above photo may be used to facilitate addition. If the total of single candies is more than 10 then regrouping is required. So, the shopkeeper gives one more packet to make one additional set of 10.

Variations:

  1. It is not necessary to play this story with candies. Kids may not be willing to give back the candies after each round ๐Ÿ˜ง. And double digit numbers can be very large! You can use pom-poms or marbles as candies.
  2. For the initial rounds, the number of candies can be such that no regrouping is required. The regrouping can be required in the subsequent rounds.
  3. To keep the interest up, each round may have a separate story. For instance, one of the โ€˜daysโ€™ can be a normal day, whereas the other a โ€˜Party dayโ€™. On Party day, Sunny and Pinky demand large quantity! ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿฌ
